It all depends on what is meant by gun control.

It used to mean "regulating ownership and use of firearms". But it's become a code-word for the disarming of the civil population. Both the NRA and HCW use it that way now. Hrmph. Lousy euphemisms.

I myself would gladly welcome certain forms of gun control, e.g. registration, SO LONG as it came bundled with clear legislation, law that no State or municipality could pre-empt or restrict, that secured an adult citizen's right to
1) own,
2) operate,
3) buy and sell,
4) carry concealed or open,
5) bequeath
6) be exempt from any recurrent taxation/licensing/insurance fees on
any firearm.

Certainly these rights would be subject to restrictions (no hunting in the suburbs, no dumb or mean acts with guns are tolerated, nuts and felons can't legally buy/own, etc. etc.) but a law like the above would establish once and for all that there is a boundary inside which "common-sense gun control" breaks down.

Right now such a boundary isn't obvious. And imo it is a massive failure of the NRA and their p.r. arm that what was extremist anti-gunnie rhetoric (get the ASSAULT WEAPONS off our STREETS!!) ten years ago is now the prevailing attitude.

I'm for gun control the same way I'm for car control. I like seatbelts and catalytic converters. I also like Corvettes. But I'm sort of glad that the guy down the street doesn't have the right to pull the mufflers off his.

Where am I going with this? I forgot.
