range hardly makes a novice a gun expert.


That I do. But I'd consider my training of my wife was superior to that training that the law requires (none) and that required for hunting (very light). We actually dry fired and disassembled the weapon at home before going to the range. I checked her skills for removing, loading and handling, and unloading the weapon. Now I'm not certified to be a shooting instructor, but that isn't what's required to teach someone to be safe with firearms, IMO.

I was at a range once where a couple of guys were "sharing" one hand-gun, an automatic. They would hand it to each other with rounds in the chamber, barrel first, fingers inside the trigger guard. I left and told the rangemaster. He ejected them. The Marines that were shooting with me at another range near El Toro were much less polite about a couple of idiots doing similar maneuvers there.
