INTC--Intel starts Net "streaming" in Europe
LONDON, Oct 10 (Reuters) - U.S. computer chip maker Intel Corp said on Tuesday it was moving into Europe with its Internet media business that will let customers transmit anything from movies to conferences on the Net.

It said it was opening a new broadcast operations centre in England to serve customers throughout the continent.

Intel, diversifying from its core activity of making processors, said in May it was spending $200 million over two years on its new Internet media services unit.

A tenth of that has now been earmarked for Europe, where operations are due to begin in November.

Initial European customers include GuinnessWorldRecords.com and Fibro Telecom Interactive.

The streaming network enables companies to deliver content such as live concerts, feature films, radio programmes, training and financial briefings over the Internet with high quality.

According to Jupiter Research, the streaming media market is expected to be worth $2.5 billion by 2004.

Intel also said last year it would provide Web-hosting services but microprocessors still make up four fifths of its revenue.

Key competitors for its newest media venture include Akamai Technologies Inc (NasdaqNM:AKAM - news), which provides technology to speed the delivery of rich media content over the Web, and Yahoo! Inc (NasdaqNM:YHOO - news), which provides Webcasts of live events thanks to its acquisition of Broadcast.com.
