Education is probably a more important bulwark against totalitarianism than guns. A lot of stupid uneducated people with guns are likely to do what they are told. Educated people tend to think for themselves- or at least the educated people I know do- I don't want to over generalize. In a country the size of ours the pacification of the population would be extremely difficult with or without an armed populace. What I worry about is ignorant people welcoming dictatorship with open arms (saying things like "I forgive my government for lying to me about selling arms for hostages because gosh darnit I know they were real PATRIOTS!" Gag me with a spoon. Real zealots more like. Dictatorship often comes dressed as a patriot. And fools welcome it.)
