The issue of basis is always open to question by the IRS until the position is sold. You thus take the risk by making a basis assumption that is unfavorable to you now - that risk is that the IRS forces a different, inconsistant and less favorable assumption on you when you sell your lu. You may choose to take that risk but it is simple to fix right now and then it is behind you. You can't get whipsawed later if you do it right now. It will take less effort than the message exchanging we are now doing on the topic.
