Don, you are correct about the big firms having TA types with a lot of horse power. When I interviewed after graduating, the two industries most intense on hiring the best mathematicians/statisticians was the NSA(National Security Agency) and Financial Firms and they did offer good $$$ to get some of my phd buddies. The NSA was interested in us math types for cryptography and the financial firms wanted people for developing short term and long term models for trading. These guys are all in the back room with high powered computers, economists, AND psychologists to develop behavioral models as well. They want to get into your head and anticipate your moves as well as finding patterns in the markets to aid in moving their money. Reaching the 11:00am doldrums. Time to cover shorts. Good luck.
