Usenet and email were around since the eary days of UNIX systems. Both are WAN (wide area networks and you could connect via any one with a dialup connection. All you had to do was get an account at a local university (just go to late night courses), or as we could in Wisconsin, dial up the local library which was connected to WISCNET (a network of Wisconsin educational institutions) and ask for the email, news feeds, etc. ARPANET turned into NSFNET which grew to the internet as we know today. For a better look at how this develops, look at a pair of pdfs I found on the net by Michael Froomkin about ICANN. In them you will find a very good history of DNS and the internet complete with dates, names, and places.
