The media clearly set out to smear Cheney early and cubbie hole him as "rich old guard". First thing out out their mouths was the Mandela thing. After that the figured they had him holed and basically ignored him. It's not until they were literally forced to give him air time via debate did we see just how intelligent a man he is and like you said, a good choice by Bush.
It should be very evident how the liberal press is orchestrating the election. Sure, some try to be unbiased but the bias shows through regardless. Some are more blatant about it.
