Discussing the existence of God seems to me a waste of time: since no empirical proof exists in either direction, the discussion can only go around in circles.

This is true. If one ultimately ends up discussing it with Logic then one hits the bounds of Logic as producing unverifiable statements that sound true, but are unprovable. If one discusses it with belief, then one ends up with something that is only compelling to oneself, and thereby untransferable. If one truly is looking for a personal God, then that is truly what one gets!!
