Philippines PLDT Unit, Digital Island In Internet JV 10/10 22:16 (DJ) Story 7002 (AOL, CONE, GTSC, ISLD, PHI)
MANILA (Dow Jones)--Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PHI), or PLDT, said Wednesday its unit, ePLDT, has entered an Internet joint venture with Digital Island Inc. (ISLD).
The deal will give Philippine Internet subscribers access to Digital Island's Global electronic-Business Delivery Network.
ePLDT said it has joined Digital Island's NextEdge program and will deploy Digital Island's Footprint content delivery servers within ePLDT's network facilities in the Philippines.
The PLDT unit will provide co-location space and network services to Digital Island as part of Digital Island's NextEdge program, an initiative that benefits leading service providers around the world, including America Online Inc. (AOL), Carrier 1 International S.A. (CONE), NTT Data Communications Systems Corp. (J.NDC), GTS Corp. (GTSC), Japan Telecom Co. (J.JTC) and WebTV Networks.
PLDT said ePLDT will also be installing Digital Island's Footprint servers within its network to enable subscribers to Infocom - the Internet arm of PLDT
- to enjoy faster, more reliable access to hundreds of leading web sites.
Digital Island is a U.S.-based global e-business delivery network which provides hosting, content delivery, networking and application services.
ePLDT is the main corporate vehicle for PLDT's Internet, e-commerce and multi-media businesses. ePLDT will also operate PLDT's Internet Data Center, worth 1.6 billion pesos ($1=PHP47.16).
At 0142 GMT (9:42 p.m. EDT Tuesday), PLDT shares were down PHP10 at PHP770.
