Surprise! Surprise! Gore says he doesn't agree with his campaign challenging Bush's intellect!

Officials from Al Gore’s presidential campaign have openly challenged George W. Bush’s intellectual capcity, but the vice president said today his opponent is “plenty smart” after all.

“Personally, I do not question his intelligence,” Gore said today in an interview with ABCNEWS.

Since this weekend, the Gore team has been ratcheting up its efforts to paint Bush as “confused,” “bumbling,” “babbling” and “ignorant.”

“George W. Bush seems incapable of talking about the important issues in this campaign in a coherent way,” Gore spokesman Mark Fabiani said Monday, just one in a series of statements from the Democratic candidate’s team drawing attention to the Texas governor’s mispronunciations and misstatements on the campaign trail.

“I think that the spokespeople on both sides have gone farther in their comments about the other candidate than either Governor Bush or I would be comfortable with,” Gore said today. “It’s not the kind of comment I would make.”
