I don't think Europe is homogeneous concerning ADSL. While the BT position seems to be unclear, German Telekom is pushing ADSL in Germany with discount prices. Most likely they trying to both drive the CLECs out of the market and get a head start against cable modems, which are not widely available in Germany (yet) (TV-Cable were part of the former state run Telekom until recently). I am not 100% in the technology, but my understanding is that ADSL (contrary to ISDN) is packet switching. It will support switching the backbone architectures of the Telcos to IP-based networks to make more efficient use of network bandwith. Which in the end means that all the Telcos will finally make the move to xDSL. What is staying on ground in Europe is wireless access as last mile solution. Wireless in Europe will be mobile UMTS in future. BTW: German Telekom is distributing Siemens modems (of course). Michael
