SCHAUMBURG, Ill.--Motorola Inc. today reported semiconductor sales grew 30% to $2.07 billion in the third quarter compared to $1.59 billion in the period last year. Sequentially, Motorola's chip revenues grew 3.6% from $2.0 billion in the second quarter of 2000.

Corporate-wide, Motorola posted sales of $9.5 billion and net earnings of $598 million. Sales were up 15% from revenues in the third quarter last year. The company matched Wall Street's consensus for earnings at $0.26 per share, based on a survey of financial analysts by First Call/Thomson Financial.

"Significant contributions to the company's growth in sales and operating profits came from the semiconductor products, broadband communications and global telecom solutions segments," said Robert L. Growney, president and chief operating officer of Motorola. In the third quarter of 2000, Motorola reported special charges totaling $95 million prior to taxes, including items for the phasing out of two old fabs in Austin, Tex., and Mesa, Ariz.

Motorola said its third-quarter semiconductor orders grew 19% to $2.2 billion from last year. Operating profits in Motorola Semiconductor Products Sector reached $190 million in the quarter, compared to $60 million in the period last year.

According to Motorola, chip sales were "up very significantly" in Asia and "higher" in Europe and the Americas.
