There are other reasons for the big focus on revenue, but one has to do with the crazy valuations that have taken place over the last couple years. Focusing on net income (even 10 years out) was a hopeless exercise in justifying valuations, so the search for other "metrics" such as page views or gross revenue growth became standard operating procedure. Sort of like "if you build it, they (profits) will come."
