Lehman Brothers Inc. cut its rating of C CUBE MICROSYSTEMS INC.
to outperform from buy, a source at the firm said. The
downgrade follows an announcement Tuesday by the Milpitas,
Calif., digital video company that second-quarter earnings
could fall as much as 50% below Wall Street expectations. The
company cited seasonal factors and increased competition. It
said earnings will probably be 20 to 25 cents a share. Analysts
cited by First Call Inc. had predicted earnings of 40 cents.

C CUBE MICROSYSTEMS INC said it will report lower than expected
earnings for the 2Q, with earnings per share of between $0.20
and $0.25 and revenues of about $70 million to $75 million.
C-Cube said its 2Q ends June 30. Analysts' 2Q mean estimates
were $0.39, according to First Call. The company said most of
its expected shortfall in revenue and earnings will come from
reduced sales of its MPEG1 decoders used in video CD players
sold in China. The company said these reduced sales are due to
a lower demand that reflects a seasonal slowdown in the market
and to continued price declines in response to competitive
pressures. (Reuters 08:22 AM ET 05/20/97)
