FruJu is right. In my case as a multimedia professional, I tend to flip from program to program. Since I do a lot of web authoring my file sizes tend to be small so rendering doesn't take all that long hence Altavec is not so important. However it does take applications quite some time to open and close. Here my Athlon is much faster.

I still use my Mac to do video renders. But even here while the rendering is faster editing may not be faster. It still makes sense to use a Mac if you are doing a specialized task that takes advantage of AltaVec the majority of the time. I think this market is limited to high end graphic users, Magazine design etc, and video editing intended for Television, DVD or VideoTape and a few other areas.

So it's just not something Mac investors can gloss over with statements of "They are fast enough for most tasks." They will NOT be fast enough. They never are. More processor speed = the ability to do more tasks. New application always proliferate to fill the void that faster speed engenders.

This is a serious problem that serious investors must wrestle with.
