Neocon,

We both understand funds on margin are a non-issue. (Fund managers do not buy stocks for a fund on margin anyway.) The fund shareholders got/get slaughtered nonetheless.

Take a look at this for irresponsible cash/margin being thrown around:

Take a look at the current margin debt. (pull down to second set of charts)

He removed the 1929 margin debt chart from the site (the one I was going to look for.) I'll have to look elsewhere. Trust me, the margin debt employed in THIS market far surpasses the 1929 market IIRC. The Dollar Volume Trading Chart for 1926-2000 (first set of charts)might give you an idea of how the margin debt chart looks like.
