A new twist in metro broadband story

moneycentral.msn.com

"

Companies such as Cogent, Yipes and Telseon, all still private, have built their
services around Ethernet, the dominant technology used in corporate
local-area networks (LANs), operating over a wide-area network (WAN) or
deploying all-optical networks that can be programmed to support multiple
technologies. The greater efficiency of this network is making it possible for
these companies to provide service at 100 MBPS speeds for roughly the cost
of a 1.5 MBPS T1 connection. On price alone, this is an easy sale: Throw in
the flexibility of the network, the ability to add new services such as dedicated
high-speed video and advantages in monitoring and management, and it
becomes a no-brainer for potential corporate customers.
