"Investments — The Company’s investments are classified as available-for-sale securities and are reported at fair value. Unrealized gains and losses are reported, net of taxes, as a component of stockholders’ equity. Unrealized losses are charged against income when a decline in fair value is determined to be other than temporary. The specific identification method is used to determine the cost of securities sold. Realized gains and losses on investments are included in Financing and Other when realized."

Further:

< All that tells me is that DELL purhcased $812 million more in securities than it sold. That has absolutely nothing to do with the performance of Dell's venture capital unit,.....> Correct.

<.....and it also doesn't give any indication of how much of Dell's cash flow was a result of the venture capital unit. > Incorrect. If the cash flow was as a result of venture capital operations it would show here.

<. That $812mm in purchases could have been cash flow generated by the operating side of the business, or it could have been cash flow generated by the venture cap side of the business.> So? It was generated nonetheless.
