Z -

I have a cable modem. It costs $39.95 plus taxes. The price includes the Internet Service Provider. I am planning to expand the service to two more computers. My understanding is I will need a $50 hub, a $15 ethernet network card for each computer, CAT 5 wire to each computer and an IP address for each new computer for $5 a month.

I have tried to compare performance with DSL owners and find it impossible to measure because the speeds are constantly changing from second to second. Both are lightning fast as compared to 56K modems and the "always on" feature is great.

My understanding from the Last Mile thread is that there are many flavors of DSL to include ADSL, VDSL, DSL light and others. The performance and type of DSL can be improved if you are closer to a telephone switching station. If you are less than a mile you should be in good shape. I have heard horror stories about both systems but service and reliability become important and this varies from provider to provider. I have been lucky.

Good luck with your decision.

Regards,
Mark
