Japan SGI To Develop Supercomputer With 750 CPUs
Thursday, October 12, 2000

Anyone know if this is still part of U.S. SGI??

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Japan SGI Ltd. will develop a supercomputer equipped with more than 750 CPUs (central processing units) for government-affiliated Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) for an estimated several billion yen.

The supercomputer will be based on Japan SGI's high-performance server SGI Origin 3000, released this summer, and will be one of Japan's largest scale models.

The institute, which is taking part in an international project to develop a nuclear fusion reactor, will use Japan SGI's supercomputer to calculate simulations at its Ibaraki Prefecture laboratory.

Japan SGI beat out rival IBM Japan Ltd. for the order, thanks to its technology for employing more than 500 CPUs in one system. Last year, it developed a supercomputer with 640 CPUs for Tohoku University.

The market for supercomputers is rapidly expanding, with growing demand from the science and technology field. Competition is heating up between foreign manufacturers that employ numerous CPUs and major Japanese firms that use a specialized CPU.
