At the time of that terrible murder, the prosecutors wanted the death penalty. They stated that if they were unable to seek it, the defendants might be charged under the federal hate crime law. Perhaps this was the existing law to which GW was referring.

My own opinion is that we don't need hate crime bills- they're redundant. The victim's mother was in such pain at the legislature when she spoke. While my heart goes out to her, the statement that "no one should die because of color, religion, or sex" seemed off to me-- NO one should be murdered for any reason. I just can't see murder as some sort of sliding scale depending on the victim's status.
