Hi Scumbria,

Ramtron has had their SRAM cached cores patented since pre EDO days, and disclosed at JEDEC for years I might add. Last fall they licensed NEC to use part of the IP for their VC DRAM.

VC DRAM is also very good in managing latency. ESDRAM is a little faster by some measures but not so much that the Mom & Pops would notice. Its biggest deficiency is a substantial die penalty because of the SRAM implementation they designed. (16, 1Kbit SRAM caches vs 2Kbit SRAM cache for RMTR) But both require much less real estate than the recently deceased DRDRAM.

I suspect that NEC chose its design to maximize its differences from both RMTR and RMBS. They weren't quite successful with the former, but have appeared to avoid the latter. MU has also licensed NEC's design. But I suspect that neither design will make big waves in the market until the JEDEC decision is made on DDR-II which is probably no sooner than 4Qtr/01.

RMTR's DRAM IP is core intensive it appears and right now they seem to be putting maximum effort at designing an eDRAM for manufacture by Infineon and Cypress, I'm assuming it will be targeted at the Com market and generally as SRAM replacement/alternative so I also assume this will be at most a 64Mb and under density. One of their EE's heads a JEDEC SRAM standards group now.
