Press Release
Leading Distributor Selects Blue Wave's ComStruct for VoIP Development Tool
Nu Horizons voxbox Powered by ComStruct and Sun Microsystems CompactPCI Technology
CARROLLTON, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 12, 2000--Blue Wave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:BWSI - news) today announced that Nu Horizons Electronics Inc. (Nasdaq:NUHC - news) is to use its ComStruct(TM) building blocks for communications processing in the voxbox(TM), its new Internet Protocol (IP) Development Tool. The voxbox is a CompactPCI®-based system that enables network and telecom equipment providers to rapidly design and deploy Voice over IP (VoIP) solutions. The voxbox will be available through Nu Horizons, a Sun Microsystems authorized microelectronics distributor.

Nu Horizons will use the ComStruct CPCI/C6400 Digital Signal Processing (DSP) resource board to provide a powerful and open processing platform, with the scalability required for high-density VoIP applications. Powered by CompactPCI motherboard technology from Sun Microsystems, the standards-based SPARCengine(TM) CP architecture solution suite is designed to address the specific needs of VoIP developers. According to a report by IDC (September 1, 1999), the worldwide IP telephony market is predicted to reach $19 billion by 2004.

``We have leveraged best-in-class products from Blue Wave and Sun to position voxbox as the tool of choice for VoIP developers. As an authorized distributor for Sun, Nu Horizons will help drive this cutting-edge technology into the communications equipment community,'' said Arthur Nadata, President and CEO of Nu Horizons. ``ComStruct's integrated approach has helped us to develop voxbox and take the lead in this competitive market.''

``ComStruct provides a consistent and effective way for developers of network-based equipment to focus on differentiating their service and application offerings and not on low level software development,'' said Kevin Parslow, executive vice president for Blue Wave Systems. ``This announcement underlines the competitive advantage that ComStruct can provide in the expanding VoIP market.''

Blue Wave Systems' ComStruct is a set of modular and scalable communications processing building blocks that includes hardware, software and DSP resources. ComStruct enables telecom infrastructure equipment manufacturers to develop, test and deploy carrier-class wireless and wireline technology for applications ranging from 3G wireless to Voice over IP. Part of the ComStruct product line, the CPCI/C6400 family has been designed with a standardized architecture throughout the range to ensure software compatibility. Featuring up to four 200-MHz, TI C6000 series DSPs and optimized for multi-channel processing, the CPCI/C6400 board offers network interfaces and a dedicated real-time system controller in a single slot.

At the heart of ComStruct is the FACT(TM) software framework that enables customers to easily incorporate commercially available or proprietary algorithms for the rapid development and full deployment of high-density telecom applications.
