As for Russia, most Americans and Brits were hoping that both the Germans and Russians would grind themselves to pieces against one another. The Soviets had plans to invade eastward in 1942, btw. The non-aggression pact of 1939 was only a brief respite for Stalin as he built us his army to take on Hitler. But Hitler beat him to the punch by a year and both nations spent their nation's youth on one of the most brutal campaigns the world has seen.
