Er, first of all, CO2 and CO are two different molecules. Second, wrt auto emissions, where do you think the carbon goes? Clean burning auto engines produce just as much CO2 per gallon of gas as dirty ones, or a tiny bit more because the pollutants from dirty engines are largely from incomplete combustion. Burning anything with carbon in it mostly puts the carbon into C02 form, and it's fairly well known how much fossil fuel gets burned. The CO2 level in the atmosphere is well studied also, and the rising levels correlate quite well with the amount injected from burning fossil fuels.
