** Off Topic ** Yes, Z. As one network-zero to another, I can say it seems like A Simple Plan because it worked as expected. Your mileage may vary <VBG>. I had read and reread the description of the setup by clicking on the Linksys Router Tech Helper at:
linksys.com

Its show and tell approach is excellent. It holds your hand and walks you through the seemingly complicated configuration with pictures. It even tries to scare you by saying, "If you cannot access the Internet, changing a few settings on your EtherFast Cable/DSL Router should get you connected. Most PCs have settings which prevent immediate connection to the Router, and require further configuration." Just click the link for additional troubleshooting help for that. Mine just worked from the get-go.

Currently, my computers function on the LAN without even seeing each other. Windows makes it fairly easy (too easy Steve Gibson at GRC would say) to set up file sharing and/or device sharing on the "Network Neighborhood" by changing settings with the "Control Panel" "Network" icon. That is a whole 'nother off-topic discussion. I do occasionally change my settings on a temporary basis to get and send files between hard drives on the different computers. You can set different restrictions on each computer for what you share (and even choose by particular users or passwords) to a single folder or drive or device or share everything.

While an application can be run on any computer from any other, it may not be as practical as having it installed on each computer where needed because it can interfere with another user from accessing the same file or application at the same time.

Maybe we should take further discussion to the Computer Learning thread or feel free to PM me.

On the other hand, I suspect these little home-LAN-on-the-WAN scenarios are going to be ubiquitous creating a need for more affordable NAS boxes. In fact, my old 150 MHz Pentium will soon be resurrected from the attic for connection to port#3 of the Linksys to serve as a box for cheap hard disk drives. I see the 7200RPM WDC 40GB is $159 after $30 rebate in yesterday's "PC Connection" catalog.
