The difference is that a motor car had a benefit - it got you to where you were going faster.

In this case there is no benefit... There is no net benefit to the consumer that is purchasing a more expensive consumer electronics device... just because it has routing code on it. What is the benefit to the user that has routing code on their cell phone. Please suggest something they'll be able to do that a non-router cell phone can not.

(BTW: We haven't even touched on the increased infrastructure costs due to the proliferation of IP addresses - this will require IPv6 to be implemented network wide).
