He exaggerated at every turn, at least by misleading statements. The internet was alive and carrying e-mail before he got into the act. He sponsored legislation at a key point that severed military and civilian uses, and helped to expand civilian development. Surely that was good enough. Instead, he claimed that he had "taken the initiative to create the internet". "Initiative" and "create" implies that there was nothing there before he came along.

He similarly implied that he had discovered Love Canal, when it was well known before he came upon the subject. He exaggerated the results of his career as a reporter. He lied about his wartime experiences. He made up the story about his mother-in-law's medication. The best you can do is say that it is not important, you cannot deny that it does not occur.......

As I said, I do not blame Gore for his slip on the presidency of Yugoslavia, and I do not blame Bush for his slip on the number of executions. And, as I said, I do not think that countering "rankings" with initiatives one has taken to improve matters constitutes evasion........
