Paul - Re: "If it's true, then their SMP Athlon Demo at the MicroProcessor forum just 3 days ago was a TOTAL HOAX !!"

Apparently the Demo was AMD trickery.

There was no public demonstration of a running MP system as suggested by the AMD press release. Rather AMD showed a system with two Athlons (1.2 GHz, FSB266) and DDR-SDRAM behind closed doors on the 15th floor of Fairmont Hotel. However AMD's marketing manager Bob Mitton refused to show the inside of the system - probably some kind of raw assembled prototype. Mitton waited until the quarterly results were announced before he commented on the Mustang. Like the 760MP chipset the Mustang should debut in the first half of 2001. Other than the larger cache it won't feature any other architectural improvements, especially not an improved branch prediction unit as reported by various news services.

Rich Heye of AMD's Microprocessor Division explained at the Forum that AMD aims primarily at the server business with the dual Athlon. However frontend technology, especially DDR RAM is not of primary interest in the server business, at least not now as some representatives from renowned server companies pointed out to newbie AMD during an open discussion. In this business performance is less important than reliability which has yet to be proven as far as DDR-SDRAM is concerned.

Tony, the last part confirms that your are dead on target about RAS in the service business.
