There seems to be a parallel with 1980, when the hostage crisis worked against Jimmy Carter and contributed to his defeat. Much later, it turned out the Republicans had apparently persuaded the Iranians not to return the hostages until after the elections. Just a little illegal nosing around in foreign policy by civilians with an agenda.

There is some evidence that the same thing is happening now, with Republican advisors encouraging the more radical Israelis to make provocations that would cause the peace talks to collapse. Hope this isn't true, but the Republicans are not exactly inexperienced with campaign dirty tricks.
