The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Oct. 13, edition that governments
in Canada and the United Sates Thursday moved to bolster their fuel cell
technology industries by announcing financing programs for early-stage
projects. The Globe's Peter Kennedy writes that the federal and B.C.
governments plan to boost Canada's fuel cell industry through a $13-million
program that will be used to support companies developing the
environmentally friendly technology. Also Thursday, the United States
Department of Energy pledged $100-million (U.S.) for fuel cell related
programs next year. Ballard Power Systems says, "This new funding helps us
to build a market and develop a supply base." Ottawa and the B.C.
government are contributing equally to the package, which will be offered
through the Western Economic Partnership Agreement. It includes $980,000
that will be used to create Fuel Cell Canada, a non-profit organization
that will identify demonstration projects that qualify for government
financing and provide development and support.
