Andy - Re: "Since this is a rather slow market day, I was wondering if you could share what you have heard about Itanium's performance in the field. I know about the clock speed being a little disappointing (733 vs. 800 MHz), but I have not read anything else about its performance. Are people at the pilot sites generally satisfied with it?"

I have not heard much of anything except - as you noted - the clock speed is a little below what some customers have expected.

However, even at an initial launch speed of 733 MHz, the ITanium will be as fast as their competition - SUNW and Alpha - which seem to be stuck in the sane range for REAL PRODUCTS.

As for performance, the LACK of any news is good. The media and press and gossip sites are ALL OVER BAD NEWS like maggots on garbage - and since there have been no material reports of poor performance, I am assuming that the ITanium is doing just fine in these areas.

The relative CONSTANT FLOW of press releases by software companies announcing ITanium support is VERY encouraging - and I think that testifies to the ITanium's capabilities.
