NEED HELP - People here were kind enough to help me once before, so I'll try again; anyone that can help, thanks in advance.

I bought a new Compaq Presario Notebook Model 1800XL 700mhz PIII recently and all is well except that Windows refuses to acknowledge the internal port 2 modem.

This doesn't stop my Dos-based programs from finding it, or most Windows programs find it, except Winfax which I use constantly.

I have tried the 'forced ports search' where in Winfax you hold down the shift key at the modem installation to force the program to find the modem; and that partially works, but then, of course, on the next screen I get Serial Com1 and the LPT1 and the only ports where I can install the on board Lucent V90 modem.

More info:

I should say that Windows DOES see the MODEM, but not the actual Port 2. If I go to modems under the control panel it sees the Lucent modem and says it is on Com2, HOWEVER, under windows input/output devices it only shows Com1/LPT1 - no sign of a com2.

Tried to get windows to see it again by deleting the com ports altogether, then rebooting and it re-installs Com1/LPT1, but no Com 2 once again. Tried hardware install from the control panel also, no good, can't find it.

Tried F1, F8, F10, DEL, etc, at boot up to look at BIOS setup, but the PC refuses to go to setup.

Any help, appreciated ... if so reply to my name here or PM.

Thanks,

vb
