Rate craze hits Caribs Aframaxes 13-Oct-00

Rates for Caribbean Aframaxes rocketed to 70 x WS 325 with rumours that WS 340 was paid from Mexico on Thursday. If the later number was actually done then rates have leaped 65 points in four days, brokers commented. Amazingly, freight for up-coast voyages is now about $1m. “The days when brokers could make more than a living off one account and in one region are back”, exclaimed one old time Connecticut broker. With plenty of enquiry and tonnage tight rates may increase further.

Meanwhile, PDV is still awaiting offers for its 80,000 to 120,000 tonnes heated crude oil cargo from Venezuela to Singapore loading October 14-16. However, brokers reported that there was not much interest in the cargo at this stage.
