How long do gorillas remain gorillas? It depends on the lifetime of the value chain which they underly. We are thinking lately that computation will move out to the web as broad band arrives, so the gorilladom of MSFT may end then. It was a long profitable run. SAP's popularity seems to be diminishing. Maybe it was never the classic gorilla that our text outlines? I'd like to suggest a theorem to be proven, i.e. that software is stickier than hardware. The people who deal with telecommunications equipment are usually highly trained engineers; it's nothing to them to change gadgets as fast as they appear on the market. People who deal with software, not developing it, but just using it, are often less sophisticated people. They cling to what they know and dislike change. Of course everybody will note exceptions to this and many are well aware that many tech companies, CSCO, EMC, NTAP etc. are mixed hardware/software companies. Nonetheless I think it is important to estimate stickiness. I'd predict on this basis that software companies SEBL,ITWO and CMRC will last longer as gorillas than hardware companies BRCM, JNPR and Corvis.
This particular comparison is not my main focus but differences in stickiness is. Does anybody have different opinions?
