Nokia Unveils New 3G Network Solutions and Mobile Internet Application Platforms for Operators and Service Providers
Oct. 11, 2000--Nokia introduces a new range of solutions for 3G networks and Mobile Internet enabling platforms at the UMTS 2000 Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
With the new solutions and platforms, Nokia is committed to its aim of providing the first 3GPP compliant 3G networks with open interfaces in 2001.
As speed is critical in 3G, Nokia's target is to maximize operator and service provider revenues by offering the fastest-to-market service platforms. The Nokia Positioning and mPlatform Solution enables operators and service providers the shortest time-to-market for new revenue generating services.
Operators will also be able to quickly create and tailor new services for their customers, increasing customer loyalty and trust, while making a smooth transition to 3G.
The radio network accounts for up to 70 per cent of infrastructure investment in 3G and this is where most cost savings in a the network can be achieved. Nokia continues to introduce industry-first radio access solutions that dramatically reduce costs and improve network capacity.
The new family of WCDMA base stations support the Nokia Smart Radio Concept enables operators to improve capacity by up to 75% and use roughly 30% fewer sites compared with traditional network rollout methods. The new Common Radio Resource Management solution will increase radio network capacity up to 50%.
These new industry leading Nokia solutions give operators the opportunity to build on their existing business, rapidly address new markets and opportunities, reduce 3G investments and create a smooth evolution towards more cost efficient all-IP 3G networks.

Nokia will also be introducing live 3G applications, ranging from music video downloads to interactive shopping. These unique demos will be running in a live 3GPP environment. Nokia Introduces Nokia mPosition And mCatch For Location-Based Services
The Nokia mPosition Solution has been introduced ; a complete end-to-end solution providing operators with location based services for mobile networks. With location-based information and applications, mobile subscribers can access a range of new, personally relevant services, such as traffic and weather reports, restaurant, theatre or movie ticket bookings. Also, emergency services will be an important area for location based data.
A new network based positioning system was also launched called Nokia mCatch, one of the solutions supported by the Nokia mPosition. Nokia mCatch is a Location Based Services system that supports GSM networks with an upgrade path to GPRS, EDGE and 3G networks.
Successful trials are currently underway with Nokia mCatch.
Nokia introduces unique IP-RAN Common Radio Resource Management for multi-standard 3G mobile networks
Nokia has unveiled its Common Radio Resource Management, (CRRM) which offers a breakthrough in IP Radio Access Network technology. Nokia's revolutionary CRRM places the radio resource control for several radio network access standards into a single server.
It will increase radio network capacity by up to 50% and simplify the operation of future multi-standard IP-based mobile networks.
The Nokia CRRM will ensure interoperability and bring greatly improved efficiency in multi-standard networks, which will become the industry norm.
Complete Base Station Family - More Choice For 3G Mobile Networks
Nokia UltraSite WCDMA Optima base station family is a unique new range of 3G-capable base stations, which offer freedom for network operators when introducing 3G coverage and capacity.
Nokia unveils three new base stations, offering the widest family of WCDMA network products on the market, available from the second half of 2001.
The new products are built on the highly successful Nokia UltraSite WCDMA Base Station and site solution, launched earlier. All Nokia WCDMA base stations are 3GPP standards compliant from day one.
Nokia's integrated solutions greatly reduce operating costs and this integration now extends through the technologies and product generations to fully utilise existing networks as well as new 3G networks.
