E. you complained about the lack of description of apps. I defined those apps that offer those who wish the opportunity to go beyond the mediocre. My systems are simple to setup and watman.com does realplayer fine on any of the four eyes. Even my 2.0.36 system has no difficulty with realplayer, but yes that's best left to simplest like myself. I run fvwm and fvwm and fvwm. I like it simple, same simple. All the software I've listed will run on all the system's you described and the versions I have will run on all your current kernels.
