China Telecom & Hutchison connect networks
By Reuters staff

12 October 2000

China Telecom said on Thursday it had connected its phone network with that of tycoon Li Ka-shing's Hutchison Telecom (Hong Hong) Ltd to meet growing demand for telecoms service between the mainland and Hong Kong.

"The integrated network can help boost the transmission capacity between the mainland and Hong Kong to meet the ever growing demand for quality telecommunication service," the two companies said in a statement.

China Telecom, the country's largest fixed-line phone service provider, said it linked its infrastructure with the fibre-optic network of Hutchison Global Crossing, a 50/50 venture between Asia Global Crossing and Hutchison Telecom, controlled by Hutchison Whampoa Ltd.

The two networks are connected via an 80-km so-called synchronous digital hierarchy ring running from the southern city of Guangzhou to Shenzhen and to part of Hong Kong's New Territories.

"The increased transmission capacity brought by the...ring will meet the yearning needs for voice and broadband telecoms services from users of the two regions," Zhang Guo Zhen, a director of China Telecom's construction division, told a news conference.

Hutchison Global Crossing operates a wide range of telecoms services including local phone and international call, Internet access and broadband services.

China Telecom, a former state-owned monopoly still commanding an almost exclusive franchise on fixed-line services, is also the largest provider of Internet access in China.
