PSINet needs to hurdle challenges to offer better service to the public

By EDISON D. ONG

Can PSINet Philippines live up to its marketing pitch
as the provider of premier Internet service in the
country?.

Company executives believe they can deliver their
promise. However, potential clients and end-users prefer
to wait and assess the overall economic climate where
cost cutting and austerity measures are being observed.

Fresh from its participation at the recent Comddap Expo
2000 at World Trade Center, the company made many
people, from students to professionals, raise an eyebrow
or two. Most visitors to the browsing station and PSINet
Philippines booth expressed disappointment over terrible
browsing experience, unmindful if the telecommunications
service company is the one responsible, or not, for the
technical glitches.

Such is the challenge PSINet needs to hurdle in the
Philippines wherein there is much to be desired in service.

In a press statement on its official launch as "The
Internet Super Carrier" last October 10 at Hotel
Intercontinental Manila, Therone Yupangco, country head
of PSINet Philippines, said his company pride itself in
offering world-class business solutions.

"We have established business synergies with major
players in eCommerce, multimedia delivery systems and
electronic transaction products and services," he said.
"We live by our mission which is to become the preferred
Internet super carrier by providing the best value for your
business."

At the launch program, PSINet Philippines presented
various products and services such as PSINet Access
Card, Managed Services, Facilities Management Center
and Communications.

PSINet, Inc. (tagged an Internet Super Carrier)
headquartered in Virginia, USA has major presence in the
international Internet community through its dominant
presence in 29 countries and more than 900
points-of-presence and operations in the US, Canada,
Europe, Latin America and Asia. PSINet is a
facilities-based provider of Internet access and related
services to business.

The company, officials said, has a lot of major milestones
in the Internet industry which gives PSINet Philippines the
leading edge among other ISPs in the country. PSINet is
the first in providing commercial Internet access, as well
as the first independent ISP with a global ISP network
worldwide. It is the first ISP to offer 100% guaranteed
uptime Web hosting services and the first to provide
dial-up LAN connectivity. Also, PSINet is the first to
implement, deploy, and commercialize nearly every
important technical development that makes the Internet
what it is today.

They added that in terms of infrastructure, PSINet
possesses a global infrastructure consisting of fiber,
Internet data centers and B2B e-Commerce technology
and capabilities. The company, they said is very focused
in providing premier Internet service as demanded by the
business communities around the world.

PSINet Philippines is a result of the joining of two
companies, namely Iphil Communications Network Inc. and
InterneXt Group Inc., more popularly known as I-neXt
Internet Service.
