Joseph--Please do note the areas of my post to which you responded come directly from my quoting of SI poster named American Spirit. He is the author, not I.
But, on the quick, regarding the Vietnam War, our ally, the French, got that one going. The Kennedy Administration brought in military advisers which helped to escalate the situation. Then LBJ's made it much bigger. However, it was Nixon--the presidential candidate who supposedly had "the secret plan," who really, really escalated the matter. I believe there were more deaths under the Nixon Administration than the two Dems combined.
Regarding the S&L crisis, it was a result of a greed whose door opened from the Reagan and Bush notion that these folks could basically do what they wanted. If I remember correctly, this was the time where the big lobby efforts on the states was to open up interstate banking and there seemed little to no oversight of the S&Ls. Also, I believe someone from the Bush clan made money and then got a nice bailout in that one.
Unfortunately, I'm short on time and not near the computer much these days, so I can't comment extensively. Again, since he was the author of the comments to which you responded, I recommend you write to American Spirit with the concerns you expressed to me. Best of luck!
