Bush was not a pot-smoker, he prefered coke. Along with booze. When he got loaded he turned mean and insulting. (His true personality coming out?) That's when his wife gave him the ultimatum, either give it up or I'm leaving you. He gave it up when he realized it could ruin his political future. He also claimed he was born again though three is no evidence of this from anyone close to him. Except for one discussion with Billy Graham at his father's house he has never been heard discussing religious conversion with anyone, much less acting on it. GW is also very competitive with Jeb, who veryone expected would go a lot farther than GW. GW therefore had something to prove and bitterly waged a "war" against his father for awhile so that he would recognize him as the "winner" he is. This needing to prove himself to his father fuels his ambition.
Interesting stuff and all from the Gail Sheehy article.
