The constitution is a living document. It would not be terribly meaningful to us today (imo) without the reams of construction that have been gleaned from it. We are no longer in 18th century

The statement "the constitution is a living document." Is frequently used by those who wish to ignore what it actually says and instead say that it means what they want it to say.
If the consitution is "living" in that way then I wish we would kill it.

The constitution includes a method for modifing it to deal with changeing circumstances and ideas. It includes an amendment process. If you find any part of the constituion obsolete and stupid, I suggest you push for an amendment to repeal it. If you think more should be added to the constituion then try to amendment to add your new idea. If however the government (includeing the supreme court) can just ignore it and instead tell everyone that it means whatever they want it to say then there is little point in having a constitution.

We have made a lot of progree in many ways since the 18th century, most noteably in technology and wealth but also in greater equality for minorities and women. All of those things are good but that doesn't mean every change is good.
I would rather have a federal government that was truely limited to the "18th century" consititution and I feel that when when the people of our country do decide that the federal government needs a power not granted to it by the constituion that they should amend it rather then ignore it.
