[edit]Hi Frank, are these free-space units from the 80's/90's still operational? Probably hard to get parts in the event of a breakdown, but maybe they "upgraded" to a more recent offering when they experienced problems. Any idea?

re:>>Most of all, however, it's been the attention from the publicity that they've received. The attention they've received is, IMO, the result of some well-orchstrated events and that probably would have elevated any other unit the same way, given the following that Goerge Gilder has now.

I guess we all took the bait too, since it was the Gilder tout of Terrorbeam that got everyone here and on FCTF to take a closer look (as much as was possible, anyway). Even though we probably beat it to death back then (given that there was only so much hard information), and a couple times since, the press that you see on the topic still only covers two or three companies beyond Terabeam, and *always* includes Terabeam (as if it were some clear leader). Funny how these things work out.

So what year do you think we will see the first free-space optical communications standards (note the plural)? Heck, why should free-space optical play out any differently than wireless? Multiple proprietary solutions will just churn indefinitely. The only way proprietary has longevity is if free-space optical remains a small niche forever. In that case, standardization has no real benefit.

Think the free-space guys will have to play by open access rules?
