I was really dumbfounded by that article, too. Of course the uplink doesn't have to be by telephone line, that's wrong. I would break down satellite internet into three main categories - there is the broadcast category, where the satellite provides high speed data feeds to ISPs which in turn provide the pages to their clients; there is the DirecPC model where the downlink is satellite and the uplink is telephone, it could be cable if you were willing to pay the expense but no one would; and there is the two-way satellite model which Gilat2home is beta-testing now. I was offered the chance to do the beta-test, but let the deadline go by. Anyway the headquarters is McLean, VA which is not far from where I live, I intend to drop in the next time I am in McLean and schmooze them.

And of course Craig McCaw is spending a boatload of money on Teledesic. And then there's Skybridge, Spaceway, Cyberstar and Wildblue, all still viable projects. So I am a bit skeptical of the claim. BWDIK?

At any rate, two-way satellite communication is the most satisfactory concept for rural and isolated locations, no question. 30% of the world's population have never used a phone. I don't know where I got that statistic but it's astonishing.
