Concerning the Jews and the Jewish state. It is sad but instructive to note that Jews were treatedbadly long before Nazi Germany appeared. In the 1800's in Eurpot they were locked into Jewish gettos and leading citizens and intellectuals spoke out agains them. The polits of exclusion is always tempting as an easy road to achieving power and a type of unity. It is always easy to bring one group of people together in love and affection so long as there remains a small minority on which they can take out their hostilities. By berating the minority they create a cause for unity among the larger group.

A lesser people than the Israelies would have solved the Palastine problem once and for all by practicing genicide against the Palastine people (and I am not in any way advocating this -- the Palastine people are a fine people, but such action is exactly what they can never do because doing this would imply that there was some way to justify the wholesale extermination of the Jews. Thus the nation of Israel must be strongly committed to peace and engaging the Arabs.

The Jewish state of Israel is necessarily a Samuri state because they can not afford to loose one war. There is no place to retreat--just into the ocean. They must be constantly vigilant and hard as nails on security matters. In there case it is better to be feared than to be loved because it is easy to see that the Arabs will never really love them.

Yet, there is such a huge opportunity for the Arabs to better themselves by engageing Israel. It is the necessarily fanatical commitment of Israel to security that is easily misunderstood by the Palastines to be a lack of commitment to peace.

Thank God we do not live in such structurally troubled areas as Israel (or the Balkans which has similar problems).
