>>still not sure why someone else couldn't come to the party just as quickly as JNPR has, tho. Typically, one would expect to see 4 to 5 large competitors and dozens of bit players.<<

there are two things that are barriers to competition from other companies (besides CSCO and JNPR) who want to join the party

one is interoperability issues-- customers want to be sure that anything they add to their networks will work with what's already there. Right now, JNPR is the only company with a router that is interoperable with CSCO. That is essential and will keep many others out.

In addition, customers want to keep the number of different vendors used to two because at more than two, interoperability becomes much more difficult

A second issue is the time and expense of qualifying a vendor. It's worth it for #2 to keep #1 honest. Not worth it for #3, especially with interoperability issues outlined above

If you are really interested in learning about JNPR competitive position, be sure to listen to the conference call. Well worth your time, and issues of competition are almost always discussed
