Archipelago to buy Compaq computers to build ECN

By Nicole Volpe

NEW YORK, Oct 16 (Reuters) - Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE:CPQ - news) said
on Monday that alternative trading exchange Archipelago has agreed to buy more
than 1,500 Compaq ProLiant computers for its planned buildout of the automated U.S.
stock exchange.

Archipelago, with a current volume of more than 80 million shares per day, and the
Pacific Exchange, the third most active stock exchange in the country with a volume averaging nearly 25 million
shares each day, announced plans in July to form a joint exchange.

The deal doubles the number of Compaq servers, which are computers that run networks of other computers, used
by Archipelago.

Some 1,500 Compaq ProLiant DL 580, ML570 and DL360 servers have either been ordered or will be ordered by
the end of the year to provide processor, memory, storage and networking capabilities for Archipelago's two data
centres in New York City and Chicago, the company said.

``In particular, we are impressed by the demonstrated reliability of Compaq's ProLiant line,'' said Buddy Meek,
Archipelago's chief information officer.

UBS Warburg analyst Charlie Wolf said the deal bodes well for the ProLiant line at Compaq.

``It's a good signal,'' he said. ``I think of all their lines of business this year and the last half of last year, ProLiant
has been a big, bright spot.''

Pending regulatory approval by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the Archipelago Exchange will
provide its professional trading participants with a fully automated trading platform for New York Stock
Exchange, American Stock Exchange and Nasdaq stocks.
