I was with NOVL for one year. I was not a casualty of the layoffs. Fortunately, an opportunity presented itself that I could simply not pass up. Were it not for that, I would still be at Novell.
The information released to the public was very honest regarding the layoffs. Granted, Novell could have done a MUCH better job addressing the rumors running rampant both internally and externally. Effectively, as Novell said, the layoffs hit "operations" hardest, particularly in regions with poor operating efficiency, like EMEA. Novell was very kind in escorting people out the door and was pretty generous with the going-away presents.
Really, the layoffs were more a function of reorganization, which is the larger story. Reorg affected the company much more radically, particularly in regards to Sales, Product Management, and Development.
I don't know that the reorg was necessarily effective. Looking at it objectively, it appears that boundaries were reinforced, if anything. The stealth groups didn't help either. But that goes beyond the bounds of your question :)
