It was Clinton and Rubin's decision to start paying down the national debt after many years of neglect which was the #1 biggest reason for our eight years of prosperity and low interest rates. Also the technology revolution Gore helped as much as any leader in Washington. To give Bush Sr. credit is wishful thinking. Bush Sr. presided over a recession and the end of the S+L debacle which started with Reagan. The deficits mounted, interest rates were still high, unemployment was high, racial tensions were high. His "read my lips" broken promise might have actually been a positive in the long run but if he helped our economy by breaking his #1 campaign pledge it can't say much for the man. His final stroke was the Gulf War which did give us stable oil prices for a long time. That we can thank him for, though he should have taken out Saddam when he had the chance.
